Presentation of the institution

Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture (BUCEA) began in the early 1907’s liberation Beiping Li Industrial Vocational High School for Beijing Architectural College (when he was vice mayor of Beijing, a famous historian Wu Han as president), approved by the State Council in 1977 as a university, renamed Beijing construction Engineering College, 1982 was identified as the first country to grant bachelor units, in 1986 allowed for a master’s degree granting unit. 2011 was identified as the Ministry of Education “Excellent Engineers Training Education Program” Universities. April 2013 was renamed the Ministry of Education approved the Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture, was named “Green Capital University campus demonstration school.” Beijing 2014 was rated “party building and ideological and political work of art colleges and universities.”

BUCEA has 11 two colleges and three basic teaching units, College of Architecture and Urban Planning, Civil and Transportation Engineering, Environmental and Energy Engineering, School of Electrical and Information Engineering, Economics and Management, Engineering, Surveying and Urban Space information, electromechanical and Vehicle Engineering, and Law, College of Continuing Education, international Education, Department of computer Education and network information, ideological and political theory teaching and research department and Sports Ministry. Schools existing more than 12,500 people, including more than 7,500 full-time undergraduates, doctoral and master more than 1,900 people, adult education college students, more than 3,000 people, more than 120 students. Existing 34 undergraduate majors, including the Ministry of Education specialty 3 – architecture, civil engineering, building environment and equipment engineering; Beijing specialty 7 – architecture, civil engineering, building environment and equipment engineering, water supply and drainage engineering, project management, surveying engineering and automation. The school has “architecture” doctoral-level disciplines, a post-doctoral research stations, 12 master’s a discipline, a master’s interdisciplinary point five professional degree authorization points and 8 categories Master’s degree in the field of engineering authorization points. Beijing has a key disciplines three disciplines – architecture, civil engineering, surveying and mapping science and technology, a discipline in Beijing two key disciplines – management science and engineering, urban planning study.

In the past decade, supported by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-rural Development of China, CRATerre-ENSAG and Wu Zhi Qiao (Bridge to China) Charitable Foundation, the team of BUCEA carried out a series of research projects at the national level, aiming to explore a feasible way towards ecological architecture by utilizing earth-based resources and traditional construction wisdoms. During the process, what the team experiences in earth architecture could be classified into three phases: exploration and application of eco-potentials of traditional earth tech, anti-seismic design and improvement of traditional structure system, and innovation of earth-architecture-system based on material sciences. Based on the experimental and constructional researches, a series of earth-based techniques in structural design, construction tool and method suitable for the local conditions got carried out and have successfully applied in 17 regions of China by technical training and demonstration construction, not only to rural dwelling construction but also to large-scale contemporary architectures, such as the Vanke landscape project, the Macha village center, Beijing 2019 World Horticultural Exposition and Erlitou National Museum which has been the biggest earth architecture in the world.

Educational activities

1. Prototype-construction-based training to craftsperson and villagers
2. Technical training courses to local governments in cooperation with MOHURD
3. The long-term practical study with demonstration construction for master students
4. The middle-term design courses equipped with earth-based technology for bachelor students
5. Summer workshops in villages to all university students with various backgrounds.
