Earthen architecture is an important part of Iran’s architectural heritage. There are many earthen sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List. There are also many contemporary earthen buildings. Indeed, raw earth is particularly suitable for reducing building’s embodied energy; passively improve hygrothermal comfort; recovering excavated soil otherwise considered waste and facilitating recycling of materials used at end of life.

CRAterre is offering a 2-week theoretical and practical training course to around 15 students, to help young professionals develop their skills in earth construction techniques. The aims of the course are to 1) provide an overview of earth construction cultures; 2) learn how to observe earth in order to determine its main characteristics, and to learn about the most common laboratory tests used to determine the preferred techniques for a given soil; and 3) understand the principles of earth design and construction.

Application timetable:

  • Until 1st September 2024: deadline for sending applications to zohreh.mirbaha@diplomatie.gouv.fr
  • 20 September 2024: announcement of results and start of visa procedures;
  • 12 – 27 October: Autumn School in Grenoble, France.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Iranian nationality and residence in Iran;
  • be a recent graduate or a student enrolled in a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral programme in
    architecture;
  • hold a certificate certifying a B2 level in English;
  • have a proven interest in or a project related to earthen architecture;
  • be no more than 35 years old on 1 January 2024;
