In July 2025, BASEhabitat hosted its seventh summer school on renewable building materials in Austria. An international group of trainers and participants explored building techniques with earth, straw and reeds, creating and shaping rammed earth walls, a garden pavilion and various clay brick and lightweight clay samples. Knowledge transfer, practical experience and creativity found their place in the workshops, creating a special learning environment.
The summer school provided a platform for participants from various backgrounds, including construction managers from Ghana and Saudi Arabia, robotics researchers from Germany, passionate architects and craftsmen, and community project activists from Greece, Colombia and Bangladesh.
As collaboration is particularly important for raising awareness for renewable building materials, we were delighted to have on board partners from the Technical School of Timber Construction Kuchl and Salzburg University of Applied Sciences, who are leading experts in timber construction with decades of experience.
Networks have been established, expertise and enthusiasm have been spread and we are excited to see the ideas and projects that will emerge from this event.
